The Symbolic Formation of the Heart: On the Art of Conversion

SchindlerToward the end of what is no doubt the most famous “image of education” in Western literature, Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, the Greek philosopher expresses the essence of this great human endeavor in a succinct formulation: Education is the “art of the turning-around, or conversion [technē . . . tēs periagōgēs],” of the whole soul, from the shadows of derivative trivialities to the bright forms of original truth, which shine in the light of the Good, the supreme principle of all things. In my brief presentation, I propose to reflect on this characterization of education,
