Manuscript Submission Guidelines
All manuscripts (two hard copies and disk, if mailed; or emailed in .doc, .wpd, .rtf, or .pdf) should be accompanied by an abstract of not more than 150 words and must follow The Chicago Manual of Style.
Style Notes
Communio uses footnotes, not endnotes, and does not use bold or underline in its format. Use italics to indicate emphasis.
Periods and commas are inside quotation marks.
Use one space, not two, between sentences.
In general, do not capitalize after a colon.
If the article is divided into sections, please number them. Capitalize only the first word of the section title.
When citing Scripture, use Catholic abbreviations (two or three letters, no period) as found in the Chicago Manual of Style 14.34.
Use ibid., id., i.e., and e.g. (not italicized.)
Do not italicize foreign phrases that are commonly used in English, e.g., vis-à-vis, Zeitgeist, a priori.
Please provide the full first and last name of authors in citations, if possible.
Please provide the city, publishing company, and year of publication in citations. (San Francisco: Ignatius Press, 1988)
Footnotes should be formatted as follows:
An article in a journal:
32. Giorgio Buccellati, "Sacramentality and Culture," Communio 30, no. 4 (Winter 2003): 533. Subsequent references use the author's last name, article title (shortened, if appropriate), and page reference:
Buccellati, "Sacramentality and Culture," 515. Do not use "in" within a journal citation. Do not use the abbreviations "op.cit," or "art.cit." It is clear from the shortened form that the full citation appears earlier. Do not use Roman numerals for journal volumes: please cite, for example, Communio 33 (no comma needed) instead of Communio XXIII.
A selection from a book:
4. Robert Spaemann, "Zur philosophisch-theologischen Diskussion um die Atombombe," in Grenzen. Zur ethischen Dimension des Handelns (Stuttgart, 2001), 100-500. Do not translate titles of articles, chapters, or books.
A selection from an edited book:
27. Theodore Adorno, "Letter to Walter Benjamin," in Aesthetics and Politics, ed. Ronald Taylor (London: Verso, 1977), 121-122. Note that the correct order following an "in" is Title, ed. or by Name, rather than the incorrect formula of "in Ronald Taylor, ed., Aesthetics and Politics."
Submissions are acknowledged upon receipt by post or email and then submitted to a panel of reviewers. A decision is returned generally within 2-3 months. Communications regarding articles and editorial policy should be sent to:
